In successful beef cattle breeding, there are no shortcuts, no quick fixes – more a matter of doing lots of small things well... Relentlessly! Focus on, what we can influence, what we can change. In genetic terms, the results of tight management are measurably bearing fruit.
At CBV it has meant 42 years of hands-on management in very practical circumstances of low-cost production and sieving out the dross. Never underestimate the value of cashing the ‘freeloaders’, quick!
We are now well into our genomics phase. Phenotypic validation has been our key to progress for our first 37 years. Now we are five years stronger with our collaborative genomic research at QAAFI.
We are also mindful that there are no overnight successes or sureties in genetics and remind our clients of the words of two of the nation’s leading geneticists, Hayes and Banks stating in recent times, ‘that without phenotypic rigour and tight management, the current genomic GBVs can turn to dust easily in five years!’ That is why CBV publishes the full four generations of data on every sale bull for total transparency, integrity, and validation.
Although it is early days, we are seeing enough breakthroughs in genomics to drive us harder and deeper into powerful research. We are only interested in research that will help the profitability of practical cattle herds on grass. Mostly that is based on reproduction and survival at low operational cost. Maybe useful GBV’s are the result of rigour and adversity? This has definitely been seen in the results of the past.
CBV genetics are herd-changers; and our pace is picking up. Speed matters. Our Brahman cattle are fertile, gentle, growthy and adapted.
We do not want to sound prescriptive, because we realise that only you know your full circumstances and capacity. But on the other hand, we can, as individuals, profit from a gentle nudge down a new or innovative pathway for the beef cattle industry.
